Gossip Girl, based on the New York Times best-seller book series written by Cecily von Ziegesar, is an American drama television series that airs weekly on the CW. It made its first appearance on September 9, 2007. Gossip Girl was created by Stephanie Savage and Josh Schwartz. Filming of Gossip Girl is done in New York City, Brooklyn, Manhattan, and the Upper East Side of New York. The series is currently in the middle of its third season, although news of a fourth season has not been released yet.
Gossip Girl follows the storyline of the novel extremely closely and showcases the lives of five rich teenagers, each who attend one of the most prestigious private schools in the Upper East Side. The entire show is narrated by an unseen blogger that makes random comments throughout all of the scenes during the show. The blogger is voiced by Kristen Bell. Every episode begins with Gossip Girl’s blog page and a picture from the debut episode, after which scenes change very quickly.
The cast of Gossip Girl is comprised of nine regular recurring roles, all of which came directly from the book series. The main character is Blake Lively, who plays Serena van der Woodsen. She is the protagonist and is what could be called an “it girl.” Penn Badgley plays Dan Humphrey, who is a writer and somewhat of an outsider who inadvertently becomes part of the Manhattan group. Leighton Meester plays Blair Waldorf, who is a guy that’s in the very top tier of the Manhattan social scene. Chace Crawford plays Nate Archibald who is thought of as the “Golden Boy” of the Upper East Side and is extremely rich. Ed Westwick plays Chuck Bass. He is the antagonist of the show who has had somewhat of a troubled past. He is a womanizer and always causing some sort of problem.
The premier episode only gained about 3.65 million viewers, which was much less than anticipated and put the show in last place for its time slot at 9:00 pm Wednesday night. The series continue to lose viewers during its second season due to fierce competition from rival shows, such as Private Practice and Bionic Woman, which showed at the same time on different networks. The third season has only two million viewers, which has made ratings for the show fall drastically.
Gossip Girl got mixed reviews at the start of the series. Although it was highly anticipated by viewers and critics during the 2007 season because of its being based on a New York Times best seller, however it was deemed a “guilty pleasure” by some, rather than a must-watch television program. Many critics have claimed the series doesn’t accurately follow the plot of the novel, however author Cecily con Ziegesar has overtly supported the show.
Gossip Girl and its cast-members have been nominated for various awards and won a few as well. The show won “Choice TV Show Drama” and “Choice TV Breakout Drama” at the Teen Choice Awards in 2008 and 2009. It was nominated for “Breakthrough Performance” at the 2009 Primetime Emmy’s.
